NJPW Super Jr. Tag League 2026 Begins October 24 as Twelve Teams Chase Newly Unveiled Trophies

New Japan Pro-Wrestling is preparing to kick off another international tag team tournament, and this year's competitors will have something new to fight over.

Literally.

NJPW announced Tuesday, October 20, that the 2026 Super Jr. Tag League will feature newly designed trophies, giving the twelve participating teams an updated prize to pursue when the tournament begins Saturday, October 24, in Saitama, Japan.

The competition will feature two blocks of six teams, with the top-scoring representatives from each block advancing to the tournament final at Power Struggle on November 3 in Hiroshima.

And considering the talent involved, there should be some particularly interesting matches along the way.

Among the tournament's most recognizable competitors are reigning IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions El Desperado and Místico, who will open their campaign against KUUKAI and Master Wato.

That's an intriguing opening-round matchup, particularly because of the existing history between the competitors.

Desperado has previously teamed with both Wato and KUUKAI, creating an interesting situation where familiarity could become either an advantage or a liability.

There's something to be said for facing somebody who already understands your tendencies.

They know your timing. They recognize your setups. And if you've spent enough time working together, they might even anticipate your next move before you've completely committed to it.

Of course, that familiarity works both ways.

Elsewhere, the tournament will feature several intriguing international combinations, including KUSHIDA teaming with Nick Wayne as Time Splitters V.2.

The pairing offers a fascinating contrast between an established veteran with extensive experience in Japanese wrestling and a younger performer who has already developed a reputation for confidence, athleticism, and character work.

They'll begin their tournament against HOUSE OF TORTURE representatives DOUKI and Yoshinobu Kanemaru.

And considering the opposition, I suspect the newcomers will discover rather quickly that technical ability isn't the only thing they'll need to worry about.

Additional teams include Taiji Ishimori and Robbie X, YOH and HYO, Blake Christian and Lee Johnson, and several other combinations representing NJPW's junior heavyweight division and its international partnerships.

What I particularly appreciate about a tournament like this is the opportunity it provides for wrestlers to develop chemistry over multiple matches.

Tag team wrestling is a different animal from singles competition.

You can put two exceptionally talented performers together, but that doesn't automatically make them an exceptional team.

The best combinations understand how to complement one another, recognize when to take control, and create opportunities for their partners without making the match feel like two separate singles performances.

That chemistry takes work.

And sometimes a tournament is the perfect environment for discovering whether a partnership actually has what it takes.

NJPW's newly unveiled trophies feature a double-helix-inspired design intended to represent the possibilities created when two wrestlers operate in sync.

It's an appropriate concept for a competition built around teamwork, timing, and the ability to function as a cohesive unit.

The Super Jr. Tag League begins October 24, with the tournament final scheduled for November 3 at Hiroshima Sun Plaza Hall.

Twelve teams will enter the competition.

Only one will leave with the trophies.

And somewhere between the opening bell and the tournament final, I suspect we'll discover which partnerships are genuinely greater than the sum of their parts.
