New Japan Pro-Wrestling's Super Junior Tag League continued on October 27 in Koga City, Japan, with seven matches, three A Block tournament encounters, and a standings picture that suddenly became considerably less forgiving.
DOUKI and Yoshinobu Kanemaru defeated Místico and Masatora Yasuda in the main event, moving to six points and eliminating their opponents from tournament contention. The House of Torture representatives utilized their familiar aggressive approach, including interference and an attack involving whiskey, before DOUKI pinned Yasuda with a bridging Dragon Suplex.
And there's the eternal House of Torture dilemma: they're undeniably effective at creating advantages, but how much of their success comes from wrestling ability, and how much comes from ensuring the opposition never gets a fair opportunity to demonstrate theirs? It's an effective way to win, even if it doesn't inspire much enthusiasm from anyone standing across the ring.
Robbie X and Taiji Ishimori also reached six points, defeating Master Wato and KUUKAI. Robbie X secured the victory with the X Express, eliminating Wato and KUUKAI from the tournament. With the stakes increasing, the partnership demonstrated why finishing opportunities become so important in round-robin competition. A spectacular performance means considerably less when it doesn't produce the points necessary to advance.
Perhaps the evening's most entertaining tournament result belonged to Ryusuke Taguchi and Kazuma Sumi, who upset KUSHIDA and Nick Wayne. Taguchi countered into a sudden pinfall against KUSHIDA, giving his team four points and keeping their hopes alive. That's the beauty of tournament wrestling: one moment of awareness can completely change the standings. And for competitors who entered the evening facing elimination, survival can feel almost as significant as winning the tournament itself.
The undercard featured four additional matches. SHO, Dick Togo, and Yujiro Takahashi defeated Blake Christian, Lee Johnson, and Yushin Hatazawa. YOH, Hyo, and Tatsuya Matsumoto overcame Titán, Daiki Nagai, and Gedo. Robbie Eagles, Kosei Fujita, and Hartley Jackson defeated Francesco Akira, Jakob Austin Young, and Zane Jay. Aaron Wolf, Boltin Oleg, and Toru Yano also secured a victory over Taichi, Yuya Uemura, and Taisei Nakahara.
Following Night Four, the A Block had two teams tied at six points, two teams at four, and two eliminated at two. The tournament is doing exactly what a strong round-robin format should: rewarding consistency while ensuring that one unexpected defeat can dramatically alter a team's prospects.
But there's another important consideration. Successful tag team wrestling requires more than two talented individuals sharing a corner. It demands timing, trust, and the ability to recognize when your partner needs help. Those qualities become particularly important when tournament fatigue begins accumulating.
With the Super Junior Tag League approaching its decisive stages, the question isn't simply which partnership possesses the most impressive offense. It's which team can continue delivering when every mistake becomes more expensive.
And judging by October 27, nobody should feel particularly comfortable just yet...
