MLW FUSION Results 10/22/26: Austin Aries Advances in Opera Cup, Saya Kamitani Defeats Lady Frost, and Shotzi Issues a Challenge
Major League Wrestling continued building toward Saturday Night SuperFight during Thursday's October 22 edition of FUSION, with Austin Aries facing Trevor Lee in an Opera Cup quarterfinal, Saya Kamitani meeting Lady Frost, and several championship rivalries becoming increasingly personal.
And considering some of the personalities involved, I don't think anybody should be particularly surprised that the evening eventually descended into chaos.
The biggest match of the night featured Austin Aries and Trevor Lee battling for a place in the Opera Cup semifinals.
Now, this is a matchup that immediately caught my attention.
Having worked with both Aries and Lee during my own professional wrestling career, I appreciate the different qualities they bring to the ring.
Both understand how to communicate personality through their wrestling, and both are capable of creating an entertaining encounter without relying exclusively on spectacular offense.
But Thursday's match also demonstrated why knowing how to manipulate a situation can be just as important as knowing how to execute a maneuver.
Aries and Lee exchanged offense throughout the encounter, with Lee using clotheslines, suplexes, and a backbreaker to create opportunities.
Aries responded by targeting Lee's neck and back, including a brainbuster outside the ring that nearly produced a count-out victory.
But the decisive sequence involved something considerably less technical.
Aries used the competitors' championship belts to create confusion with the referee, attempting to make Lee appear responsible for a potential disqualification.
As Lee protested, Aries capitalized with an IED corner strike before connecting with a brainbuster to secure the pinfall.
Winner: Austin Aries defeated Trevor Lee to advance to the Opera Cup semifinals.
And there it is.
The difference between winning a match and outmaneuvering an opponent.
Aries recognized an opportunity to exploit the referee's attention and used that distraction to create the opening he needed.
You might not particularly appreciate the tactics, but from a character standpoint, they make sense.
And that's important.
Earlier in the broadcast, Aries also dismissed Matt Riddle's interest in challenging for the MLW National Openweight Championship, leaving another potential confrontation unresolved.
Meanwhile, the women's division delivered one of the evening's most significant developments when Saya Kamitani defeated Lady Frost.
Accompanied by H.A.T.E. teammate RINA, Kamitani faced a difficult challenge from Frost, who relied on her athleticism and increasingly impressive offense to create several near falls.
Kamitani ultimately survived those opportunities and secured the victory.
Winner: Saya Kamitani defeated Lady Frost.
But the match itself wasn't the end of the story.
MLW Women's World Champion Shotzi entered the ring afterward and made it clear that she wanted an opportunity to face Kamitani.
And personally, I find that potential matchup considerably more interesting than simply pairing two recognizable names together.
Both women have distinctive presentations, but their approaches to professional wrestling are different enough to create an intriguing dynamic.
Kamitani possesses a particularly dangerous combination of striking ability, athleticism, and confidence.
Shotzi brings her own unpredictable personality and aggressive approach.
That's the kind of contrast that can make a rivalry compelling.
The confrontation quickly escalated when Scarlett and Zamaya became involved, leading to a larger brawl involving several members of the women's division.
No championship match between Shotzi and Kamitani was officially confirmed during the episode, but the direction of the confrontation was unmistakable.
Elsewhere, Joe Coffey defeated Andrew Everett in singles competition.
Everett attempted to use his speed and aerial offense to counter Coffey's physical advantage, but interference involving Glasgow Boys On Top helped create an opening.
Coffey eventually secured the victory with a spinning lariat.
Winner: Joe Coffey defeated Andrew Everett.
Following the match, Coffey turned his attention toward Trevor Lee and the MLW Southern Crown Championship.
The episode also provided a storyline medical update concerning CJ Gallows following an earlier attack by Glasgow Boys On Top.
According to the broadcast, Gallows was dealing with a fractured jaw, concussion, and bruising to his lung.
The Good Brothers subsequently announced that they would face Glasgow Boys On Top in a Chicago Street Fight for the MLW World Tag Team Championship at Saturday Night SuperFight on November 7.
And that's a stipulation that certainly makes sense considering the hostility involved.
When a rivalry reaches the point where the competitors are no longer interested in maintaining any semblance of order, a street fight provides a logical opportunity to escalate the conflict.
But the stipulation also creates expectations.
If you're advertising a Chicago Street Fight, the audience is going to expect something considerably different from a traditional tag team match.
And the performers need to deliver accordingly.
Josh Bishop was also victorious in singles competition, defeating Rich Royal before continuing his increasingly personal confrontation with Killer Kross.
Winner: Josh Bishop defeated Rich Royal.
The rivalry escalated further when Bishop and Kross brawled outside the building, eventually fighting through the parking lot and into the surrounding area.
With the two scheduled to meet in a Last Man Standing match for the MLW World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night SuperFight, Thursday's confrontation helped establish the level of aggression surrounding that encounter.
The broadcast also featured several important promotional developments.
CONTRA's Josef Samael issued another warning concerning the group's ambitions, including Masha Slamovich's intentions toward the women's division.
Yota Tsuji announced an open challenge for Saturday Night SuperFight, while Tessa Blanchard addressed her upcoming MLW appearance and made it clear that she intends to remind the wrestling industry exactly who she is.
And that brings me to something I appreciate about MLW's current presentation.
The company is bringing together wrestlers with considerably different backgrounds, personalities, and approaches to the business.
You have established veterans.
You have international talent.
You have performers attempting to establish themselves on a larger platform.
And you have competitors who are already recognized names but still have something to prove.
That variety creates opportunities for matchups that might not happen elsewhere.
But the important part is making sure those opportunities produce meaningful stories.
Thursday's episode accomplished that through the Opera Cup, the growing women's division rivalries, and several championship confrontations heading toward Saturday Night SuperFight.
Austin Aries is moving forward in the tournament.
Saya Kamitani has another significant victory.
Shotzi has identified a potential new opponent.
And Killer Kross and Josh Bishop appear increasingly uninterested in waiting for their scheduled championship match to settle their differences.
Sounds like professional wrestling to me.
