Jim Ross Returns Home Following Hospitalization as Conrad Thompson Shares Encouraging Health Update
There's some encouraging news concerning one of professional wrestling's most recognizable voices.
Legendary commentator Jim Ross has returned home following another hospital stay, according to an update provided Thursday, October 22, by his longtime podcast co-host Conrad Thompson.
And considering everything Ross has experienced medically over the past several months, it's certainly welcome news.
During the latest edition of Grilling JR, Thompson explained that Ross had developed a chest infection that contributed to low oxygen levels, requiring an overnight hospital stay.
The 74-year-old commentator has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
However, Thompson also acknowledged that Ross continues feeling unwell and remains focused on his recovery.
The hospitalization followed a series of medical procedures involving a shunt that was initially placed in August to address problems involving balance and memory.
Ross underwent another procedure earlier this month, and Thompson indicated Thursday that the shunt had not yet been reconnected.
While the latest update is encouraging, there's still no confirmed timetable for Ross to resume his regular broadcasting responsibilities.
And frankly, I don't think there needs to be one right now.
Professional wrestling has a tendency to celebrate people who refuse to slow down.
We admire the wrestlers who compete through difficult circumstances, the veterans who continue traveling long after most people would have retired, and the personalities who remain dedicated to the industry regardless of what life throws at them.
But there's a point where taking care of yourself needs to become the priority.
And I hope Ross is giving himself that opportunity.
Because his contributions to professional wrestling aren't going anywhere.
For generations of fans, Jim Ross wasn't simply the person describing what happened inside the ring.
He was part of what made those moments matter.
Think about how many unforgettable matches became even more memorable because of the emotion behind his commentary.
The urgency.
The disbelief.
The unmistakable ability to communicate that something extraordinary was happening without making every single moment sound exactly the same.
That's a skill.
And one that I think is sometimes underestimated.
As wrestlers, we spend an enormous amount of time considering how our actions communicate with an audience.
Our expressions, movements, timing, and reactions all contribute to the story we're attempting to tell.
But the commentary team plays an important role in helping that story reach the people watching at home.
A great commentator doesn't simply tell the audience what they're seeing.
They help the audience understand why it matters.
And Jim Ross has spent decades demonstrating that distinction.
His career has included some of professional wrestling's most significant eras, from the territory system through WWE's national expansion and the emergence of All Elite Wrestling.
Along the way, his voice became synonymous with some of the industry's most memorable moments.
That's an extraordinary legacy.
And one that doesn't diminish simply because someone needs time away from television.
Thompson expressed hope that Ross might feel well enough to return to Grilling JR next week, but emphasized that his recovery remains ongoing.
For now, that potential return should be considered a hope rather than a confirmed schedule.
Ross last appeared on an AEW broadcast during Double or Nothing in May.
And while wrestling fans will undoubtedly welcome the opportunity to hear his voice again, I think most would agree that his health is considerably more important than making the next show.
Professional wrestling will still be here when he's ready.
The matches will continue.
The championships will change hands.
And somewhere, another generation of wrestlers will be creating moments that deserve to be remembered.
But the people who helped build this industry deserve the opportunity to enjoy the lives they've spent so many years working to create.
For now, the encouraging development is that Jim Ross is home.
And hopefully, that's another step toward a comfortable and successful recovery.
