House of Glory Loads Up Salvation: Tommy End & Xelina Collide With Lio Rush & Shotzi in New York
Sometimes an independent wrestling card gets your attention because of one name. Then there are cards where you keep reading. House of Glory's Salvation is quickly becoming the latter. And I'm all for it!
Let me preface this piece by underscoring my love for HOG. I liked them a lot when I was full-time on the indies. I was cool with a lot of their talent. The company's vibe stood out to me in a good way. Their cards always seemed interesting. And they frequently avoided one of my big pet-peeves, which is flying out a whole card and thus ignoring local talents.
I cannot state enough how much respect I lose for promotions that ignore local talents. Ones who are hungry for opportunity and looking for a place to claim their loyalty. That's something I love about Lucha Patron, and have always respected about House of Glory. From top to bottom, opener to main event, you'll SEE local talents and you'll take NOTICE of them...
Now, HOG Wrestling is returning to the NYC Arena in Jamaica, New York on Friday, October 9, and the promotion has officially added a first-time-ever tag-team match featuring four wrestlers whose careers have traveled through some of the largest promotions in professional wrestling. Keep in mind as you read that I'm actually really excited about this event!
Tommy End and Xelina will face HOG Cruiserweight Champion Lio Rush and HOG Women's Champion Shotzi.
And this isn't simply four recognizable names thrown onto a poster.
There's actually a reason they're fighting.
That's important.
XELINA WANTS WHAT SHOTZI HAS: The story began at HOG Fallout in Los Angeles. Xelina attacked Shotzi and made her intentions toward the HOG Women's Championship clear. Now HOG is moving that rivalry forward in New York. Shotzi won't be coming alone. She'll team with reigning HOG Cruiserweight Champion Lio Rush, with HOG billing the pair as The Blackhearts.
Across from them will be Xelina and Tommy End. That's already an interesting combination of personalities and wrestling styles. But there's another element here that makes the match particularly interesting.
TOMMY END IS TOMMY END AGAIN: The man wrestling beside Xelina isn't being presented as Aleister Black. He isn't Malakai Black. He's Tommy End. After recently losing the PROGRESS Men's World Championship back to Cara Noir, End publicly embraced the name associated with his pre-WWE career. Now House of Glory becomes another stop in this new chapter.
Names matter in professional wrestling. Sometimes changing one represents becoming someone new. Sometimes reclaiming one means reconnecting with who you were before everybody else started deciding who you should be. Watching Tommy End navigate this stage of his career is becoming one of the more interesting stories on the independent scene.
And House of Glory gets a piece of that story.
I'm actually a big fan of all four individuals in this bout. I watched a lot of Tommy End's work for years on the indies. I enjoyed working with Lio Rush at ROH and having him on my podcast. I got to briefly work with Shotzi on the indies and at Lucha Patron and vibed well with her personality and in ring style very easily.
And last but not least Xelina!
There isn't enough I can say about getting to see her grow into her own in the latter part of her WWE career! It was exciting. It was well-deserved and long overdue! She and I had missed each other in TNA like ships in the night, where so many Knockouts were on their way out, while I was trying to earn my way in. All that to say, she really turned a bunch of doubters into some of her biggest fans and I love that for her!
THIS IS WHAT MAKES THE BOOKING WORK: Here's what I particularly like about this match. HOG could have announced Tommy End. HOG could have announced Xelina. Put them on a poster, book opponents and let their name recognition sell tickets.
That's easy.
Instead, they're entering a story House of Glory already owns. Shotzi isn't simply the former WWE wrestler standing across the ring. She's the HOG Women's Champion. Lio Rush isn't merely a recognizable name on the graphic. He's the HOG Cruiserweight Champion. Xelina isn't simply appearing. She wants Shotzi's championship.
That distinction matters.
Because independent wrestling works best when recognizable wrestlers strengthen the promotion rather than temporarily overshadow it. A name can sell you a ticket. A story gives you a reason to come back. And this is why I'm firm in my belief of not flying out a whole card. Yes this card is stacked. Yes this match is stacked. HOWEVER, it's done with purpose. And that makes all the difference...
AND HOG ISN'T STOPPING THERE: The tag match isn't the only reason Salvation deserves attention. Tommaso Ciampa will make his House of Glory debut against Charles Mason. That's another booking I like for essentially the same reason. Ciampa brings obvious name recognition and an extensive championship résumé.
But HOG isn't putting him across from another imported star for a novelty match. They're putting him across from Charles Mason. HOG gets the attraction of a major debut while one of the promotion's established competitors gets the opportunity that comes with standing across the ring from him.
That's how independent wrestling can use recognizable talent without making its own roster feel secondary. And I'm all for this as well! CIAMPA! CIAMPA! CIAMPA!
INDEPENDENT WRESTLING SHOULD FEEL IMPORTANT: I've always believed independent wrestling is at its best when it doesn't behave like it needs permission to matter. You don't need a giant television contract to create a match people want to see. You need talent. You need stakes. You need characters. And preferably, you need a reason those characters want to beat each other. You need that reason a fan would want to spend their hard-earned money to watch this show and then want to come back to do it again!
House of Glory has that here...
Xelina wants Shotzi's championship. Shotzi has something to defend. Lio Rush enters as another HOG champion. Tommy End arrives carrying a reclaimed identity.
Tommaso Ciampa is making his debut. Charles Mason gets the opportunity to spoil it.
Those aren't disconnected names. They're ingredients. The promotion still has to turn them into something worthwhile once the bell rings, of course. That's wrestling. A poster can make promises. But the match has to keep them. Otherwise there's no trust equity. And no trust equity means no more business. And that just simply won't do.
KEEP AN EYE ON HOUSE OF GLORY: There is so much professional wrestling available now that independent promotions face a different challenge than they did years ago. Getting people to know your show exists is only step one. You have to convince them that with WWE, AEW, TNA, ROH, CMLL, AAA and countless other promotions competing for the same finite number of hours in a wrestling fan's week, your show deserves some of those hours too. That your show is somehow different and you won't find its flavor anywhere else.
HOG Salvation is making a pretty convincing argument for a look.
Tommy End.
Xelina.
Lio Rush.
Shotzi.
Tommaso Ciampa.
Charles Mason.
And a House of Glory roster that gets the opportunity to stand alongside those recognizable names rather than disappear behind them. That's the part I'm watching. Because the healthiest version of independent wrestling isn't simply where established stars go between major promotions. It's where the next names worth knowing get the chance to stand beside them. Let's not let them down...
HOG Salvation takes place Friday, October 9 at NYC Arena in Jamaica, New York.
Hope to see you there!
