Chris Jericho to Portray Gorgeous George in Muhammad Ali Series The Greatest
Well, this is an interesting casting decision.
Chris Jericho is reportedly stepping into the role of Gorgeous George for The Greatest, Prime Video's upcoming limited series about Muhammad Ali. And considering the history connecting professional wrestling to one of boxing's most recognizable personalities, this is a story I find particularly fascinating.
The eight-episode series stars Jaalen Best as Ali and is scheduled to premiere November 4. Jericho will portray Gorgeous George in the fourth episode.
Now, for anyone unfamiliar with Gorgeous George, he wasn't simply another wrestler with an elaborate entrance and an outrageous personality.
He was one of professional wrestling's great pioneers of character presentation.
The extravagant robes, carefully styled hair, theatrical behavior, and extraordinary ability to make an audience react were all part of an identity that extended well beyond what happened after the bell rang.
And that presentation famously influenced Muhammad Ali.
Ali understood something that Gorgeous George had already demonstrated: athletic ability might earn an audience's respect, but personality can make people pay attention before the competition even begins.
That's an important distinction.
As a professional wrestler, I've always been fascinated by the difference between performers who simply have a gimmick and performers who genuinely understand how to make that gimmick work.
Anybody can wear distinctive clothing, adopt a catchphrase, or develop an exaggerated personality.
But convincing an audience to invest emotionally in that presentation?
That's an entirely different skill.
Gorgeous George understood the importance of creating a reaction. He recognized that people might purchase a ticket because they wanted to see him win, or because they desperately wanted to see somebody shut him up.
Either way, they were invested.
And that's the business.
What's particularly interesting about Jericho portraying George is that Jericho has spent much of his own career demonstrating a similar understanding of reinvention.
Whether audiences loved him, hated him, or simply wanted to see what outrageous thing he'd do next, Jericho understood how to keep his character recognizable while changing its presentation.
That doesn't automatically mean he'll deliver an exceptional acting performance. Wrestling and acting share certain skills, but they're not interchangeable.
Still, there's something appropriate about a professional wrestler portraying someone whose influence extended from wrestling into mainstream sports and entertainment.
The Greatest is an authorized dramatization of Ali's life, with Lonnie Ali serving as an executive producer. The series explores the boxing legend's personal life, career, and cultural influence.
And I appreciate that Gorgeous George's role in that story is receiving recognition.
Professional wrestling has influenced popular culture in ways that aren't always acknowledged.
The promotional language, larger-than-life personalities, theatrical confrontations, and ability to make an audience emotionally invested in a rivalry didn't suddenly appear when modern sports entertainment became popular.
Performers were developing those techniques decades earlier.
Gorgeous George was one of the people who helped demonstrate just how powerful that presentation could become.
And Muhammad Ali was smart enough to recognize it.
For me, that's the most interesting part of this casting announcement.
Not simply that Chris Jericho has another television role.
But that a new generation of viewers may discover how one flamboyant professional wrestler helped influence one of the greatest personalities in sports history.
That's a pretty remarkable legacy.
And one worth telling.
