Persephone Returns to Familiar Ground as CMLL Reveals Amazonas Universal Tournament Field
October is about to belong to the Amazonas.
CMLL has begun revealing the field for the 2026 Campeonato Universal de Amazonas, with the first phase set to take place Friday, October 2 inside the historic Arena México.
And among the names stepping into the tournament is a woman who knows exactly what it feels like to win it: Persephone.
The current CMLL World Women’s Champion and AEW TBS Champion joins Keyra, Zeuxis, Dark Silueta, Reyna Isis, Candela, Sanely, Olympia, Hera and Princesa Sugehit in the reported opening field.
For Persephone, however, this isn't simply another tournament appearance.
She won the Campeonato Universal de Amazonas in 2024, defeating Zeuxis in the final. India Sioux followed as the 2025 winner, defeating Skadi.
Now Persephone has an opportunity to chase that honor again — and she's returning to the tournament in a considerably different position than she occupied two years ago.
Persephone Enters October With Two Championships
Persephone defeated Mercedes Moné at La Noche de Las Amazonas in March to become CMLL World Women’s Champion.
She has since added AEW's TBS Championship to her collection and currently competes as part of a dual-contract arrangement between CMLL and All Elite Wrestling.
That makes her presence in this year's tournament particularly interesting.
She's no longer simply chasing the next step.
She's walking into Arena México carrying championships from two major promotions while attempting to repeat something she has already accomplished once before.
And the Campeonato Universal isn't the only major Amazonas accolade already on her résumé.
Persephone also captured the 2025 Grand Prix de Amazonas, giving her another significant tournament victory as her profile continued to rise both inside and outside Mexico.
Later in October, Persephone is also expected to represent CMLL in the 2026 Grand Prix de Amazonas, entering the month as the defending tournament winner.
There's Something Special About Lucha Libre
For anyone who loves lucha libre, there is a lot to be excited about here.
And I absolutely do.
I have a particular soft spot for lucha libre, and I probably always will.
During my own wrestling career, I had the opportunity to work alongside CMLL talent while working with Lucha Patron. Those experiences only gave me a deeper appreciation for what Mexican wrestling brings to this industry.
There is an energy to lucha libre that is difficult to fully explain until you've been around it.
The pace. The athleticism. The pageantry. The masks. The generations of history behind what happens between those ropes. And perhaps most importantly, the pride that comes with representing lucha libre.
It's not simply a different style of professional wrestling.
It's a culture.
That's part of why seeing the continued international growth of CMLL — and particularly its Amazonas — is so exciting.
We're living in an era where someone like Persephone can represent CMLL in Arena México while simultaneously carrying championship gold from AEW.
That kind of crossover can introduce an entirely new audience to wrestlers, traditions and a style of professional wrestling that has been captivating audiences for generations.
For professional wrestling as a whole, that's exciting.
For lucha libre, it means more eyes around the world are getting the opportunity to see what many of us have loved for a very long time.
And for Persephone?
She enters October with two championships around her waist, a previous Campeonato Universal victory to her name and another opportunity waiting for her inside Arena México.
The first phase of the 2026 Campeonato Universal de Amazonas is scheduled for Friday, October 2.
