Austin Aries vs. Trevor Lee Set for MLW Opera Cup Quarterfinals This Thursday on FUSION
Two champions. One tournament. And absolutely no shortage of confidence between them.
Major League Wrestling has announced that MLW National Openweight Champion Austin Aries will face Southern Crown Champion Trevor Lee in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Opera Cup. The match is scheduled to air this Thursday, October 22, on MLW FUSION, streaming free on Tubi at 8 PM ET.
For those familiar with both competitors, this isn't exactly a pairing that requires much convincing. Aries has spent years building a reputation as one of professional wrestling's most technically gifted and outspoken personalities, while Lee has established himself as a remarkably versatile competitor capable of switching between methodical mat wrestling and explosive offense without missing a beat. Neither man is particularly known for lacking confidence, either. Imagine that. Two professional wrestlers with egos. Shocking, I know.
There's also some history here. Aries and Lee previously met on MLW FUSION earlier this year, making Thursday's encounter another opportunity for the two to test themselves against one another. But this time, there's the added incentive of advancing in the Opera Cup, a tournament where momentum can disappear just as quickly as it arrives.
As someone who's spent plenty of time between the ropes, I appreciate matchups like this because they don't necessarily need elaborate storylines to make sense. You've got two accomplished wrestlers, two championship holders, and a tournament with something tangible at stake. Sometimes that's all the motivation you need. The interesting part will be watching how each man approaches an opponent who can match him technically while also being perfectly comfortable bending the rules when the opportunity presents itself.
And while both men enter Thursday carrying championship gold, MLW has promoted this as an Opera Cup quarterfinal rather than a title defense. The immediate prize is advancement in the tournament, along with the bragging rights that come from putting another champion in the loss column.
With Aries and Lee both looking to move one step closer to the Opera Cup, Thursday's FUSION has the makings of a match worth keeping an eye on. Two champions enter, but only one can advance, and that's precisely what I like about this bout. It screams MLW: a fusion of masculinity and showmanship. A collision of competitive egos, old-school in-ring psychology, modern story-telling, and some good old-fashioned hard hits for good measure. This match-up has the potential to go off the rails fast. Duct tape and happy thoughts won't be enough to hold Tubi together when these two clash.
Having shared cards with both competitors, and considering my ROH debut involved managing Austin Aries, I might be a little biased here. My money's on Aries.
With that said, something tells me neither man plans on being particularly gracious about losing...
